Croatia Records Release Information

The new album “Sevdahology”, the seventh studio release by the unique interpreter of modern sevdah, Bože Vreće, is on sale.

“The entire album “Sevdahology” is karasevdah film music that through eight singer-songwriter compositions speaks of primalness, metamorphosis, mysticism and the epic tragedy of longing, pain and belonging to that beloved being. All the songs have a very sacred note, spiritual and spiritually mantric in order to reach the catharsis of the courage of sublime and supernatural love,” said Božo Vrećo.

The album is a touch with Božo’s cinematic epic tragic music and almost all the arrangements on the album are completed by great strings – the Camerata string ensemble in symbiosis with musicians chosen by the heart, such as Miroslav Tadić and Matija Dedić.

The music and lyrics of most of the songs are by Božo Vrećo, while for the songs “Čemerika” (Hellebore), “Sevlija” (Sevlija), “Omer i Merima” (Omer and Merima) and “Jovan” (John) he collaborated with Branko Vučetin, whose creative energy resulted in emotional compositions that offer a special experience to the listeners.

Ana Luketin Fahrenwald is responsible for the visual identity of the album, while Adis Elias Fejzić worked out the visual design and printing in Bosnian medieval script.

Finally, Vrećo said: “I would like to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for the exceptional effort, inspiration and love for my music, dedicated to the intimate seventh album “Sevdahology”, which breathes and breathes a completely new life into the sublime sevdalinka and gives it the power to be and do anything”.

Congress of Bosniaks of North America Information

“Sevdalinka” (also known as “Sevdah”) is a traditional genre of folk music from Bosnia and Herzegovina. This form of music is an integral part of Bosnian culture but is also spread across the Yugoslavian region, including Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Croatia.

The word “Sevdah” is derived from the Turkish work sevda (meaning love), which comes from the Arabic word Sawda (meaning black bile), which was traditional used by doctors to identify one of the four humors expected to control human feelings and emotions. In the Ottoman Turkish definition, it does not simply mean black bile; it also refers to a state of being in love, and more specifically to the intense longing associated with love-sickness and unrequited love. This is intertwined with the Persian meaning of being melancholic and enamored. All of these definitions make up the composition of Bosnian “Sevdah”, describing longing for a person, a place, a time that is both joyous and painful.

“Sevdalinka” is distinguished by a slow or moderate tempo and intense, emotional melodies. The songs are incredibly elaborate, emotionally charged and are traditionally sung with great passion. The sounds draw from Oriental, European and Sephardic elements that make this type of music stand out amongst other types of folk music from the Balkans.
