Croatia Records presents the LP reissue of the album Josip Lisac & B.P. Convention Big Band International

This is another album with which Croatia Records continues reissuing anthology albums from the Jugoton catalogue. Recorded in 1975 and originally released in 1976, the album represents one of the most unexpected and special musical combinations of that time. After the release of her debut, now cult album “Dnevnik jedne ljubavi” (Diary of one Love), which was also a “who is who” of Yugoslavian rock music, Josip Lisac, on the initiative of Karel Metikoš and Boško Petrović, and with the participation of Yugoslavian jazz stars and Boško’s friends from abroad – the great Art Farmer, Clark Terry and Ernie Wilkins – recorded a jazz album, which then no one expected from her.

“It is true, for many I was too young to sing jazz, as if there is an age at which you are allowed or not to sing that kind of music?! Young people must meet jazz! Fortunately, Boško Petrović, who was my fan and Karlo’s great friend, did not think so. One day he called him and said that great musicians, a real dream team of jazz music, are gathering at the Bled Jazz Festival in Slovenia. Karlo rushed to Jugoton and arranged everything.

On that record, I showed my vocal range, upgraded myself in every song. We recorded it in 1975, when I had a big role in the rock opera Gubec-beg, but nothing was a problem for me. I loved good music as I do today. I became friends with jazz music, I adapted the songs, added that aura of jazz to them, enough to feel it. I am lucky that I have great songs that are rich because they can be performed in various ways and each new singing of them brings some new freshness into them, as if you are rediscovering them,” Josipa reflected.

“Josipa was phenomenal on the set. She sang jazz brilliantly, regardless of her age, and she was still young at the time. For example, she sang the song “People” just like Barbara Streisand would. Phenomenal. I believe that Josipa was listening to a lot of jazz standards at that time to get the inspiration for recording. There were no mistakes in the performance or many repetitions – if I am not mistaken, she recorded most of the songs on the first try. She got along so well with jazz. Her performance was so superior that I had nothing to suggest to her, except to technically record it as well as possible”, recalled Petko Kantardžijev-Mlinac, the sound engineer at Jugoton’s studio who recorded the album.

The “Josipa Lisac & B. P. Convention Big Band International” album contains ten compositions, including “Nema sunca” (Ain’t no Sunshine), “Jučer” (Yesterday) and “Čovjek s tisuću mana” (Son of a Preacher Man). It was remastered by Goran Martinac in the Croatia Records Studio and comes with a download card for downloading mp3 versions of all songs. The lacquer cutting of the recording was done at the Abbey Road Studios in London by Sean Magee, the winner of the Grammy Award for the Beatles’ “Mono Box Set”. Darko Kujundžić is responsible for the artistic design of the reissue, while the enclosed booklet contains texts by Aleksandar Dragaš, Petko Kantardžijev-Mlinac and Dubravko Majnarić, an interview with Josip Lisac and photographs by Ivan Balić and Aleksandar Vukašinović.

Josipa Lisac has been a big fan of jazz, and the Belgrade audience eagerly awaits her. Namely, her announced concert on 14 August 2024 in the Botanical Garden is already sold out.
