Croatia Records Release Information

The composer Vatroslav Lisinski is noted in the Croatian musical history as the creator of the first Croatian national opera“Ljubav i zloba” (Love and Malice). He began to engage in music relatively late, and his compositional development and education were closely connected with the Croatian Illyrian Renaissance. This new audio recording is a compilation of recordings from the Jugoton archive as a reminder of the bicentennial of the birth of the most gifted composer of the Illyrian Renaissance.

The selected works reveal his subtlety and melodiousness, but also the importance of his historical position in the context of the development of Croatian music. There is no doubt that Lisinski’s spontaneous talent and his tragic fate have intrigued music writers, musicologists, historians, and representatives of other professions to study him to this day, and this is a kind of confirmation of Vatroslav Lisinski’s artistic legacy in the Croatian cultural space.

The compilation includes some of his most successful songs (“Ribar” (The Fisherman), “Dvije ptice” (Two Birds)), while the choirs are represented by “Prelja” (The Spinner) and the vigil “Prosto zrakom ptica leti” (A Bird just Flies through the Air). The inspired offertory “Cum invocarem” (When I Call upon) has long since become part of the repertoire of many Croatian choral ensembles, and of the orchestral compositions, the overture “Bellona” (Bellona) and the idyll “Večer” (The Evening) have gained the greatest popularity.
