“Quasimodo” was the second album recorded by Laboratorium in the prestigious “Polish Jazz” series and the fifth in the band’s discography. The recorded material was in line with the style of expressive fusion presented on “Modern Pentathlon”, showing at the same time the progressive face of the band, oriented towards constant exploration.
The album was prepared extremely carefully in terms of the form of the whole, the structure of the individual compositions and the sound design. The album’s repertoire consists of four extended pieces and four short improvised fragments, two of which can be treated as intros. This is the nature of “Przejazd” (The Journey), which is the introduction to “I’m Sorry, I’m not a Driver”, and “Etiudka” (Little Etude), Janusz Grzywacz’s acoustic impression introducing “Śniegowa panienka” (The Snow Girl).
Despite the almost four decades that have passed since the album was recorded, ”Quasimodo’s” music has lost none of its appeal. It still sounds modern, and the melodic themes and sophisticated improvisations of the soloists can still inspire jazzmen of the younger generation.
