An unforgettable song collaboration between two legendary Karels

The composer’s melodic inventiveness and a voice born for the great bel canto in perfect blend. The artistic contact between two friends and age-mates, which has lasted since 1968, is newly captured on a compilation in the format of the “Zlaté kolekce” (Golden Collection). Miloš Skalka has found a total of 64 tracks for this occasion, with the booklet traditionally accompanying the songs with a dense expert commentary. From “Lady Carneval” from the 1960s to the new version of “Jdi za štěstím” (Go for Happiness) from 2019, this is a parade of successes.

Even outright hit songs, the songwriters suitably embellished arching melodies with an evergreen perspective. From the song “Přes noc” (Overnight) created for the Rio de Janeiro festival to what is actually Gott’s very last recording. A freshness of address from the late sixties and then seventies, then mostly on the words of the third to the part, Jiří Štaidl. Eighties sovereign professionalism, clouded by direct contact with foreign competition and embellished with, for example, “Včelka Mája” (Maya the Bee).

Unfailing attractiveness and positive response to the joint work of two muse-kissed, several decades proving that they deserved the gift. On this exceptional compilation, Karel Svoboda (1938-2007) and Karel Gott (1939-2019) have been given the space to bring joy even when they are no longer with us. In a fold-out paperback digipak, complete with facts, biography and photographs, this is in many ways the definitive account of an artistic friendship that reaches into everyone’s musical memory.
