16 great songs by the rocker from Brno!

Fate did not allow Oldřich Veselý to reach his seventieth birthday this November. On the title of the album he is – born on the 13th – symbolically in tram No. 13. A tribute to his extraordinary talent, this compilation of sixteen tracks from 1968 to 2011 showcases him as a composer of iconic songs for Synkopy 61 / Synkopy, but more importantly as their vocal performer in various band line-ups, including Blue Effect.

Veselý’s strong melodic ideas, sometimes flirting with classical music motifs, often categorised as quality art rock and always bearing the stamp of his ability to feel, are undoubtedly among the best of what has been produced in this field. His instrumental prowess, combined with the coveted sound of a fine organ and his later ability to use electronics, is also remarkable. Let us add to this his essential vocal brio, i.e. his special ability to present themes in a peculiar, uncalculated, manly pathetic way.

In conjunction with the expressive lyrics of Milan Hanák or Pavel Vrba, the compositions were multi-layered, multi-part, sometimes many minutes long, but never boring. Perhaps we can trace the inspiration of Uriah Heep, Yes or Genesis in his work at various stages, but in the end, Oldřich Veselý is always the key sign. A composer and singer from God, a sincere person and one of the perhaps somewhat subtle but permanently shining stars of our rock.

New sound remastering by Miloš Makovský. Recordings from the catalogues of Supraphon, Panton, Opus, FT Records, Disk Systems and Czech Radio. A narrative booklet with a memorial text by Petr Gratias, complete discography and archival photographs.
