Polish Jazz Vol. 17

Warner Music Poland Release Information

The album “Bazaar” by Jerzy Milian Trio has been reissued by Polskie Nagrania in an exclusive reissue of the cult Polish Jazz series, known to fans of Polish jazz music since the 1960s. The reissue has been prepared with great care, and the author of the refreshed sound is the outstanding sound engineer Jacek Gawłowski.

The album “Bazaar” is the seventeenth album released in the Polish Jazz series. It is the only LP by this band and one of the most interesting releases in the Polish Jazz series as a whole. The album is the crowning achievement and summary of the fifteen-year jazz career of the composer and vibraphonist Jerzy Milian. It was recorded in June 1969, a month and a half after the death of Krzysztof Komeda. The album opens with the piece “Memory of Bach”, which Komeda’s Sextet performed at the 1st Jazz Festival in Sopot in 1956. It is a beautiful tribute to Jerzy Milian’s friendship with Krzysztof Komeda. This friendship was extremely important, because if it weren’t for Komeda, pianist Jerzy Milian would have continued to perfect his craft on this instrument. The remaining pieces were composed by Jerzy Milian.

The title of the album is appropriate for its content. The listener will find exceptionally diverse music, rare instruments, various forms, colours and rhythms, expression and lyricism — in short, an abundance of auditory and aesthetic impressions. The members of Milian’s trio, which was in existence since 1966, were full-fledged co-creators of this album: double bassist Jacek Bednarek and percussionist Grzegorz Gierłowski, as well as members of the group Novi: vocalist Ewa Wanat and flutist Janusz Mych. Jerzy Milian, as a vibraphone virtuoso, uses a wide range of colours and moods, and as an improviser he reveals great and original inventiveness.

This is an important album worth rediscovering.
