The luxuriously equipped CD and Blu-ray “Family & Friends” contains the recording of a concert held in mid-March2023 at ZKM, where the famous jazz pianist delighted the audience for full two and a half hours.

The occasion for the concert in one of Matija’s favorite live spaces were three significant anniversaries. As Antun Tomislav Šaban, the secretary of the Croatian Society of Composers, explained at the very beginning, it rarely happens that one musician celebrates several big anniversaries in the same year. In Matija’s case it is the 25th year of the jazz group Matija Dedić Trio, the 50th year of his life and the 100th year of one of the greatest Yugoslavian composers, Dora Pejačević, whom Matija has been particularly fascinated by.

Matija started the concert with her opus, the piano miniatures from the cycle “Život cvijeća, op. 1” (Life of Flowers, op. 1). In the second part of the concert, he was joined on stage by Žiga Golob on double bass and Krunoslav Levačić on drums. This trio has been delighting its audience with their jazz music for 25 years, and for this special evening they played several of Matija’s original compositions as well as compositions by Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard. The special surprise of the evening, which Matija cleverly hid even from his closest collaborators, was the appearance of his daughter Lu Dedić, who sang the song “Zadnji sati ljeta” (The Last Hours of Summer) by Tvrtko Hrelec and Kristijan Beluhan.

The CD and Blu-ray contains eleven compositions in a superb performance by Matija Dedić solo as well as with his friends and family, and a richly equipped booklet published by Cantus. The album “Family & Friends” gives a perfect insight into Matija’s incredible ability to improvise, into his dedication to music, his freedom of interpretation, and into the unbelievable ease with which he introduces the audience to his musical world.
